A Fantasy Semi-Postal Stamp From Amphora

This is my first cinderella semi-postal stamp. I have been
creating fantasy issues from Amphora for some years now.
The currency of Amphora is the 'krater.' This stamp issue
is denominated at 50+20 kraters. The surcharge ostensibly
is for a charity named 'The Mermaid Hospice Fund.' This
organization, of course, does not exist; but is a literary
construction.

Such stamps are also called 'micronation stamps.'  There
are many creators of micronations, who as a hobby generate
fantasy lands, sometimes with flags, maps, coats of arms, as
well as 'postage stamps.'

The Beneficent Nereid

A Nereid is a mermaid who is a savior of sailors and
others drowned at sea. These figures from Greek
mythology should never be construed as malignant
Sirens.

Naiads are linked with medicinal hot springs in many
cultures, especially in Europe. The Naiads are fresh
water mermaids, while the Nereids are associated with
the salt sea.

The Nereids were anciently viewed as seal maidens.
In this they are prototypes for the Selkies of Celtic
legend.

Archetypes of the Aquatic Dimension

Cephalus of the Sea is a figurative ceramic sculpture rendered
in small format. It is an example of my ceramic amulets, which
I have created since the beginning of my current three dimensional
artistic endeavors.

I began in earnest to work in the ceramic medium, not as a potter,
but a sculptor in 1988. I never worked with molds, but always
handbuilt each piece. Frequently I have utilized natural earth
pigments that I have gathered in nature as final pigmentation of
my ceramic works.

The amulets seen here are patinated with carbonates and oxides.

A MERMAID AMULET

Undines, or mermaids, have been a special mythological interest of mine.
I wrote a book a number of years back entitled, 'The Mystery of the Mermaids:
Goddesses and Gods of the Sea.'

My amulets, or pendants, have been created to serve in ceramic jewelry.
The amulet below is patinated with iron oxide.

A Goddess of the Sea

This ceramic sculpture is given a name from the ancient Greek
milieu: Thalassa. This name is just one of many possible designations
of Sea Goddesses from the region of the Aegean.

Generally the Greeks 'humanized' the iconography of their divinities,
giving them completely human appearance. Exceptions exist, such as
Triton, who was depicted with a fish tail, or Persephone, who was
similarly rendered by Greek colonists in Southern Italy. . . in Calabria.

Mermaid Goddess sculptures of very ancient date exist on Cyprus, that
show Aphrodite with fish-like fins.

The Mutations of the Seahorse

This sculpture delves into the shamanic sphere of shape
shifting and metamorphosis. The Seahorse is considered
to be kindred to the chimaera, a being that is a composite
of many animals. Many emblems from heraldry partake of
the symbolic mutations that are exemplified in the Seahorse.
One often sees the blending of lion, eagle, and dragon in the
symbolic iconography of alchemical science.
