Urissakzillia Celebrates Greek Mythology With a Stamp of Syrinx, Nymph of the Reeds

The nymphs of Greek myth could well be considered a sort of fairy.

The term fairy itself is one that has numerous connotations. The term

fairy seems to stem from the Greek 'Fates.' In later legends from the

north of Europe, lore of the Fata Morgana arose. These were the

oracular spirits of the marshes.

The tale of Syrinx deals with the reeds that became the flute of Pan.

Back in the 1970's I wrote a song for dulcimer entitled 'Syrinx

Rising From the Swamp.'

The legend of Syrinx has appealed to numerous artists over the

years. Debussy is among them, who celebrated her in his composition

dedicated to Pan's flute.

ARTHUR HACKER'S SYRINX

The painter Arthur Hacker painted an image of Syrinx that recalls to a degree the image

I have created above, insofar as Hacker's Syrinx has one arm draped, and the other bare.

Syrinx

The Syrinx is the name given to the pan pipes played by Pan.

Syrinx was a chaste nymph who was pursued by Pan, whose

transformation into reeds is well known from Greek mythology.
