SKOGSRA, A PAINTING BY WHOLLEM
ON THE STAMPS OF AMPHORA

The Amphoran Postal Administration celebrates the
painted works of Eric Whollem, their postmaster general,
in this stamp issue.

The painting was done in 1972 in acrylics on panel.
Only a detail of the work is shown on this stamp.

Skogsra is a Scandinavian nymph, relating to Skadi,
the namesake of Scandinavia and Scotland as well.
In my painting she is seen with seaweed flowing from
her golden hair. Water issues from her heart. She is
seated on rocks in the sea, with the billowing clouds
of Muspelheim behind her. She is depicted as a Muse
of the Elements.

In the upper border design of the stamps, two golden
mermaids stand on each side of a krater. (A krater
is a classic drinking vessel of the ancient Greeks).
The stamps of Amphora freqently use images of
chalices, kraters and amphorae, all symbols of the
empire.
