THE HISTORY OF ARTISTAMPS

AMERICAN COLONIAL NEWSPAPER TAX STAMP PARODY
stamps like these were added to
colonial periodicals to mock British tax stamps in the late 1700's.
The Stamp Tax was a major consideration of the
American Revolutionaries

The American colonial parody stamps were not postage stamps, but rather periodical stamps, but even so rightly may be considered the first known fantasy stamps.

A MULREADY LAMPOON
1840
British fantasy postal cover

Mulready, the postmaster general of Britain, issued a series of prepaid postal envelopes in 1840, shortly after the printing of the Penny Black.

The British public disdained Mulready's covers...and there ensued a widespread phenomenon: the Mulready Lampoons.

These humorous covers often mocked British imperial ambitions....And today we can easily see them historically as early Mail Art.

THE NEW ENGLAND WHALERS
Home Post Express
was a very early fantasy stamp
woodblock edition
1851

The New England Whalers Home Express was the private fantasy edition created by a sailor who lived in Nantucket, Massachusetts.

It is now regarded as one of the very earliest known faux postage stamps, a direct ancestor of the artistamp.

THE WINANS CITY POST
was a very popular fantasy stamp created in
1862 by Hussey
It was reproduced in many colors by many
stamp fabricators including Scott and S.A. Taylor

Hussey, a Canadian stamp fabricator, was long regarded as the first fantasy postage stamp maker, until in recent years the New England Whalers stamp, a faux postage edition, appeared in the auction catalogs. The New England Whalers stamp was created in 1851, while the Winan's City Post first appeared in 1862.

Scott, Taylor and other creators of faux postage and bogus stamps were inspired by these to create what came to be called fantasy postal carrier labels. In the US at the time postage stamps were strictly forbidden material when it came to reproductions, as these were considered forgeries....but those private postal labels called carriage or carrier labels were fair game. Wuestoff and other stamp makers were encouraged to create what became the forerunners of artistamps.

Fantasy railway carrier labels became very popular in the mid 19th century.

SAMUEL ALLEN TAYLOR
Kers City Post
woodblock edition

Samuel Allen Taylor created the first fantasy local post shortly after the Winan's City Post appeared....Taylor was from Scotland but lived for a time in Canada where he worked collaboratively with Nutter, another stamp fabricator.

There is no such place as Kers City.

SAMUEL ALLEN TAYLOR
Utah Territorial Postage
this stamp was part of a larger set.
and was forged by other stamp makers later on

SAMUEL ALLEN TAYLOR
forgery
with forged postmark
Taylor's work was copied by
bogus stamp makers

Samuel Allen Taylor created 5000 fantasy and bogus stamps during his lifetime, making him the most prolific faux stamp maker of the 19th century. He created faux charity labels, making him an innovator in the area of poster stamps as well.
Poster stamps are stamps that advertize events or commemorate people, but are never intended for postal use.

Many stamps created by Taylor are from countries which had never issued postage stamps, such as Paraguay.

TERRA OF BAFFIN
hand painted fantasy stamps
created by an unknown French stamp collector
1861

A mysterious French stamp collector began creating painted postage stamps in the 1860's. He may have been French Canadian, as many of his fantasies have Canadian labels. He created hundreds of stamps.

Stamp essays and proofs are often times hand painted, but these Canadian stamps never were intended as proofs for any known postal authority. Baffin Island is north of Canada and populated primarily by indigenous Inuit people.

In the 1960's Donald Evans became well known for his hand painted postal fantasies....but historically the French artist predated him by a hundred years.

J.C. JAY
Richwoods Dispatch fantasy local carrier stamp
tied to cover with rubber stamp
cancellation
1888

This cover is an example of early Mail Art....It shows fantasy stamp by J.C. Jay, a young stamp dealer who had been persecuted by philatelic societies for attempting to sell his own faux postage stamps.

He used to hand deliver mail in his own home town franking them with his private carrier labels.

Today this cover is a valuable rarity.

GENELLI STUDIOS

Missouri
1885

PHOTO STAMP MAKER
patented by Thomas Huhn
and also Genelli
1887

Photo portrait stamps were popular in the 19th century on into the 20th century.
They were often ordered by colleges and universities, private businesses and individuals.

TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO
micronational stamps
1898

Micronations, with private autonomous post offices began to appear in the 19th century....Deh Sadang out of Malaya is another such micronation. Elleore in Denmark became well known in the 1940's.

Today many artistamp makers describe their stamps as micronational.

VIENNESE SECESSIONIST POSTER STAMP
1908
this stamp was created as an
advertisement for an art exhibition

Poster stamps first appeared in the mid nineteenth century. They are stamps created as advertisements...not for postal use...They were called Art Stamps in the early 20th century when they were at their heyday as popular collectibles.

Societies arose among collectors and albums for them began to appear in Germany in the late 19th century.

MALTA CAMP POST

1914

POLISH PRISONER OF WAR STAMP
early 1940's

Polish prisoners of war briefly managed to create stamps for use on their mail in German internment camps. They would use shoe soles to carve cancellations.

KARL SCHLESWIG
Jewish prisoner of war
hand painted fantasty stamp
painted in selvage of stamp sheet

Karl Scheswig, like the French Canadian stamp fabricator of 1861, is known today
for his hand painted stamps. These were created in a German  Nazi concentration camp. And are famous for being protest stamps.

The rest of Artistamp History is well known. Bidner, a Canadian stamp artist coined the name Artistamp in 1982.

BUTO'S BOOBIE BIRD COURIER STAMPS

Alaya, a country to the north of the Isle of Buto, was one of the first countries to be serviced by Buto's international airmail service, the Boobie Bird Courier Post. The concept of the Boobie Bird as a mail courier bird originated in Buto.

Alaya and Buto both belong to the Amphoran Postal Union, a group of states that have an agreement much like the Universal Postal Union, familiar to many of us in the Outer World.

These Boobie Courier stamps were printed by the Loyal Order of Hatchmates & Perforation Specialists. The Hatchmate concept relates to the domiciles of the Boobie Birds, who for purposes of postal delivery are trained at Boobie Bird Hatcheries in Buto.

GOOSE COURIER MAIL FROM AMORPHAGOS

Off the southern coast of Amorphagos, the Isle of the God of Dreams, there is an inconspicuous rock in the ocean. This rock is called  Goose Rock, the home of great flocks of Geese.

These geese were trained in the art of mail delivery by the folk of Amorphagos. The covers seen here are first flight covers, some of them showing maps of the routes taken by the geese postal delivery birds. Most of these covers are addressed to the Kingdom of Delphys, a large island country to the west of Amorphagos.

The stamps of Amorphagos are usually inscribed in the Cyrillic alphabet. Seen on these regular issues of Amorphagos are relics of the ancient ceramic art of the island. The stamps of Delphys seen on these covers similarly depict an ancient ceramic amulet from Delphys.

ADDENDUM

(These ceramic items are, of course, in actuality the contemporary works of myself, Eric Whollem, the author of this blog. LOL).

(The photos of the Geese were taken by myself as well. The maps are my own creations. These are all faux postage stamp creations...contemporary paraphilatelic art, here manifest in a type of digital collage art, insofar as everything you see here is cybernetic illusionism, including the cancellations. LOL).

THE BINKLISH EMPIRE

The Binklish Empire is composed of three colonies, founded by Scarabeus Binkel. Barbaru Frie Stajt is located along the Barbaru Coast of  Eastern Amphora. To the south of this one can find Binklish Vuyana as well as East Merreminde.

The Coat of Arms of the empire features a crab. In the center is the regal crown of the Emperor. Scarabeus Binkel is the first Emperor.

Sometimes the Empire is referred to as the Empire of the Parrot, or Imperium Psitachus. Binkel always took his Latin grammar with him in his travel to help communicate with the natives of regions that he explored.

One might note that Pelican Undersea Delivery stamps are used to communicate with subaquatic addresses, while addresses on land are serviced by Parrot Post.

PARROT AND PELICAN BIRD POSTAL COURIERS

After Scarabeus Binkel colonized East Merreminde he established the Binklish East Merreminde Company to oversee his domains. He had already explored the Barbaru Coast and founded colonies in Barbaru Frie Stajt as well as Binklish Vuyana.

Finding that he had mail to send to suboceanic addresses, he could no longer rely solely on his loyal parrot to deliver his letters. So he conscripted a group of amiable Pelicans, assuring them of payment in ship's cracker for their troubles. Pelicans are among the most expert of divers and Binkel believed them suitable for communications with indigenous mermaids, as well as the hybrid half-human, half mermaid members of his crew who had remained behind in Binkel's Landing in Barbaru. The Parrot would make an excellent postal navigator, but always complained when he got his feathers soaked in salt water.

Finding that his cook had become ill with an unusual ear ache after reporting that he heard a horrible wailing noise coming off the starboard bow. Thus Captain Binkel went ashore and took up lodging in a mysteriously unoccupied hotel in Merre Town, a room with a kitchen.

Captain Binkel wrote this letter to Narrie A. Kaer, a mermaid he thought he could trust back at Binkel's Landing. He knew that many members of his crew had been converted to the worship of Aphrodite by the Mermaids with whom they had intermarried. He also wisely was using this opportunity to test the mettle of the Pelicans in his service. Binkel was a circumspect Postmaster General as well as Captain.

Finding that every town he came to in East Merreminde was quiet and comletely absent of inhabitants. This made conquest of the region amazingly easy. He found these stamps in the post office drawer in Merre Town, and using the typographic press aboard his ship, the Flower of June, he quickly went about overprinting some of them for use by the Binklish East Merreminde Company.

Alarmed by the increasing sounds of mysterious wailing from the depths of the sea, and finding that many of his crew were becoming sick or jumping into the sea, Captain Binkel quickly wrote to his cohorts at the Bottom of Binkel's Bay back in his colony in Barbaru. He apparently needed reinforcements and any help he could get.

Some of his crew in Barbaru were beachcombers, but Bo'sun Blaine operated a Salvage Yard at the bottom of the sea.  He was a 'Bottom Scraper' as they say among the Mermaids. Binkel needed materials that he could not find in East Merreminde. We do not have the letter that was enclosed in this envelope, so we cannot be sure; but it seems that perhaps Binkel needed scrap iron, perhaps for shrapnel. Was there a war going on in East Merreminde? We hope not, for that land has been a peaceful realm of Mermaids for many centuries. Perhaps Captain Binkel knew nothing about any of this....but if he had only asked his Pelicans, they could have filled him in. LOL

PARAPHILATELIC FANTASY STAMP FROM BINKLISH VUYANA/ Parrot Post Stamps by Eric Whollem/ FAUX POSTAGE STAMPS/ Cybermail Art

BINKLISH VUYANA FANTASY STAMP

THE DISCOVERY OF BINKLISH VUYANA

The map below shows the routes followed by Scarabeus Binkel to the Barbaru Coast. Binkel, famous explorer known for his exploits in these dangerous waters, ventured south of his headquarters at Binkel's Landing, in what came to be known as The Barbaru Frie Stajt, to the unknown city of Vu in what Binkel called Binklish Vuyana. Vu, capital of Vuyana is located on the Sea of Glass, a body of water feared by sailors, as the perpetual doldrums, wherein the winds failed to blow for many days, was known to bring many a vessel to ruin. Thus Vuyana has remained unknown to the Outer World for centuries.

Scarabeus Binkel, hurriedly created these crude stamps for a letter to Thomas Blood. His regular perforating tools were left in camp at Binkel's Landing. And his cancellation devices were left behind as well. So he had to make do with what he had on hand, a old typesetter and inks made from the distillation of tar, gathered from his ship's hold. Seen on the regular issue is an image of Binkel's ship, the Flower of June.

THE BEGINNINGS OF THE BINKLISH EAST
MERREMINDE COMPANY

Scarabeus Binkel, who hailed from Binkel County in Western Amphora, always longed to explore the unknown reaches of Eastern Amphora. He set up three colonies along the Barbaru Coast: the Barbaru Frie Stajt, Binkish Vuyana, and lastly, arriving in the territory of Merreminde, claimed the southern part as his own, as the cities he found were mysteriously vacant. All the people were gone. This made his operations easy. He called this new land East Merreminde and his expeditionary operartions, the Binklish East Merreminde Company.

His first mate, Jack John, commented that he had established a new Empire. Binkel dubbed his holdings as the Binklish Empire and set himself up as Emperor of his new domains.

The letter below is a rare cover that remains from this relatively unknown period of history. LOL

Seen here is the use of Parrot Post delivery stamps. Binkel had trained his parrot to carry his letters.
There have been pigeon posts in history....our of places such as New Zealand and the isle of Herm, in Britain. So the use of bird couriers is not unknown. It is believed that the Amphoran region also was known for Boobie Bird Courier services out of the Isle of Buto, and also Goose Courier mail out of Amorphagos. Binkel may or may not have heard of these bird courier services. He was operating out of immediate necessity.

Binkel's pet parrot he named after himself, 'Binkel.'  This is said to help preserve his 'modesty' when it came to place names among his discoveries. LOL
