The Birthing Goddess Concept

A Goddess sculpture which depicts the female form in fashion
where she is seen to be bent at an angle is an ancient tradition
of Goddess iconography. Such Goddess images are referred to
as 'birthing Goddesses.'

Very frequently one finds that Goddess forms were utilized to
help with fertility in many ancient cultures.

Figurative Ceramic Amulets
APPROACHES TO CERAMIC SCULPTURE

The amulets seen on this post are selected as examples of
figurative abstraction. My approach has been to give my
ceramic miniatures a rough hewn appearance.

I began with stone carving as a sculptor, prior to my involvement
in ceramics. This has lead to a 'carved'  texturology in my clay
works.

THE MIDNIGHT MERMAID/ A faux postage stamp from the Jessamine Isle/ Cinderella cyberstamps by Eric Whollem/ SELKIE ART

The Midnight Mermaid

The above stamp is from a sheet of four cyberstamps that
I created for the Jessamine Isle. The Jessamine Isle is a
mermaid micronation in Oceanos. It is a realm of Selkies.

My muse is the inspiration for the Midnight Mermaid; she
was named thus for her love of swimming under the moon
and stars.

Goddess Archetypes in Clay

This blog post displays another selection of my ceramic amulets.
I have chosen a few of my Bird Woman archetypes, showing a range
of approaches to the theme.

A common unifying feature of traditional Bird Woman sculptures from
ancient eastern Europe, is a largish 'nose' or beak, often rendered in
a rounded, 'lumpish' form.

Many of the ancient depictions of Bird Women were anthropomorphic,
showing human traits, mixed with avian symbolic forms.

The Slant Eyed Goddesses of Ancient Europe

The amulet above is an example of my slant eyed Goddess forms. Slanted
eyes are very common in traditional Bird Women sculptures of antiquity.
The meaning of the slanted eyes is not determined with any absolute
certainty. One might speculate on Asiatic influences at work, insofar as
the steppes of Eastern Europe are known for being taversed by nomadic
peoples of Mongolian ancestry.

We have Marija Gimbutas, the famous anthropologist, to thank for her
studies of the Goddess, as her works are a treasure trove of information
on this heretofore neglected subject.

An Artistically Ambiguous Ceramic Sculpture
THE VENUS OF WOLLENDORF THEME

The above amulet in interesting as one can read it in two ways:
as the head of 'Bird' or as a stylized anthropomorphic Goddess,
loosely related formally to the famous Venus of Wollendorf.

In the second reading as delineated above the eyes of 'Bird' can
be read as the breasts of the Great Mother, while Bird's beak
could be read as the tapering legs of the Goddess. One will note
that a set of indentations on the lateral sides of the top of this
figurine can be read as the eyes of the anthropomorphic figure.
(The larger indentation beneath the eyes just mentioned is the
aperture for the cord of the amulet.)

The Alchemy of Jasmine
NOTES ON HOMEOPATHIC PERFUMERY

Roland Hunt's book, 'Fragrant and Radiant Healing Symphony,'
is a well written study of the mystic properties of perfume, taken
from an alchemical angle. Hunt was a pioneer in aromatherapy.
His book was first published in 1937.

Hunt's hypothesis is that perfumes exist in octaves that correspond
to musical notes. He also develops the idea that colors exist in these
same octaves.

Each perfume, color and tone exist in higher and lower octaves as
well.

According to Hunt, jasmine  corresponds to the color Yellow; he
places jasmine alongside of Citron in the position of three octaves
above middle C, in the key of E. This would make jasmine a slightly
greenish yellow.

Jasmine, a very potent perfume, has long been traditonally regarded
as a major basenote in incense and perfumery. Many olfactory
concoctions begin with jasmine, and build from there into an
orchestration of aroma. In India jasmine is called Mogra.

JESSAMINE

The word 'Jessamine' is an old fashioned English rendering of the word
jasmine. The stamps seen here are, of course, creations of my own literary
imagination.

The Queen of the Starfish

The Jessamine Isle is a fantasy mermaid micronation that exists
in Oceanos. The Queen of the Starfish is the ruler of the Jessamine
Isle.

The word 'jessamine' is an old fashioned English spelling for the
word 'jasmine.'

These sheets of faux postage stamps are more good examples of
digital serial art. See my links below to view more of my serial
art imagery from this blog.
