HOW THE EGG WARS BEGAN
During the Gold Rush era San Francisco was short of fresh produce, hence various entrepenuers ventured forth to the Farallon Islands off the California coast in search of edible sea bird eggs. The Farallons were home of a vast Murre bird population.
Two companies competed for the eggs. One was called the Egg Company while the other was called the Pacific Egg Company. A commercial war broke out wherein there were fatalities.

THE DISCOVERY OF THE FARALLON ISLANDS
Though Spanish explorer, Cabrillo, may have seen the Farallons, no record is left of such a discovery. Sir Francis Drake, the British explorer landed on the islands in 1579....and later proceeded to the Point Reyes area where he left a commemorative plaque at Drake's Bay. He called the islands the Islands of St. James.
Later in 1603 Sebastian Vizcaino landed on the islands, when a member of his crew coined the name Los Farallones, 'The Cliffs.'
In later years Russian seal pelt hunters occupied the islands, but left after the US purchased Russian holdings on the West Coast. The Russians had a colony at Fort Ross and settlements along the Russian River.
Today there is a small settlement on the southern island of the archipelago, occupied by naturalists.
