CONCOW MAIDU INFLENCES IN MY ART
Chichikollem roughly translates as Woman of Black Earth Village, based on
my understanding of the Concow Maidu language. This painting was painted
with pigments gathered in Northern California. The black is from charcoal,
gathered from a campfire at Chi Chi Te, or Black Earth Village, in Feather Falls.
I lived there for many years, having begun to make paints from earth pigments
in 1973.
