Poster Stamps for Art Blog/Eric Whollem
The 'Poster Stamp' is a specialized genre of cinderella stamp.
It is not by any means a form of 'faux postage,' but a practical
form of stamp that fills an authentic role in the physical world:
an advertisement for the artist.
The sculpture depicted in the image above was painted with
natural earth paints that I made myself from earth pigments
gathered in nature. In this I have followed the ancient traditions
of mankind. . . using mineral colors.
I was greatly influenced in this manufacture of natural paints
by my interaction with the Concow Maidu Indians of Northern
California. This group of Native Americans has utilized earth
pigments for body paint for many centuries.
The modern Maidu artist, Frank Day, is well known for his
use of earth paints to make his own contemporary visionary
paintings depicting aspects of Maidu culture.
Not only have I used my own earth paints to create my own
paintings, but also to colorize my ceramic sculptures, as in the
case of 'Moera,' seen on the poster stamp shown here.
