The Seasky
A GLIMPSE INTO THE MYSTIC LORE OF THE MERMAID

The Welsh of old believed in the Land of Summer that exists
under the sea. Often the sky gods would mate with the gods or
goddesses of the sea.

The Irish have lore to this effect as well, where Cian mated with
Ethniu, the daughter of Balor, the sea giant, to produce Lugh, the
sun god.

The Babylonians also had a mystic union of sea and sky in the
goddess, Tiamat, who had the body of a shellfish, but the head
of the sun.

The Egyptian god Ra, sailed in the Sunboat.

Apollo, in Greece, was the sun fish.

STEINER'S WASSERMAN

According to Rudolph Steiner, the anthroposophist, the origins
of the human race, which was originally aquatic, was in the sun.
In his book, Egyptian Myths and Mysteries, he outlines human
evolution from etheric plant beings in the sun to the present day
form.

He calls the merman Wasserman, or Waterman. He said
that we were androgynous mermaids in the Lemurian epoch.

It was during the era of Altantis that the human form developed
much as it is today. Legendarily Poseidon fathered the Atlantean
race through the mortal maiden, Cleito.

Poseidon's shapeshifting forms include the Horse and the Dolphin.
The modern selkies of Celtic lands are called "shifters," and can
take many forms.

THE HEAVENLY PO OF KANE

Hawaiian Kahuna shamans speak of the Heavenly Po of Kane,
Papa-o-Laka. Po is the great cosmic ocean where mankind,
animals and fish originate. It is the paradise of the Aumakuas, the
spirit beings. It is a land that can either float on the sea or rise up in
the sky.

The mermaid is called wahini hi'u i'a in Hawaiian; the fish-tailed
woman. Moanaliha is the ocean.

These are just a few ideas gleaned from my book, "The Mystery
of the Mermaids: Goddesses and Gods of the Sea."
