THE ORANGE, SACRED FRUIT OF DELPHYS

Insofar as Delphys is a maritime nation, populated by
mermaids and mermen, the orange receives honor as
the sacred fruit of the Mysteries.

In Nordic lore the god Freyr is patron of sailors, and
is also a god of fruits. The mermaid goddess Atargatis
has as her fruit the pomegranate. In the lore of Delphys
it is said that the piper at the bottom of the sea nurtured
the orange tree of the sea with the plaintive air of his
instrument. The ripened fruit of this tree in it's fullness
rose up to become the sun of the first dawn, rising from
the ocean to it's place in the sky.

The design of this stamp is from a drawing I made in
1974, and is colored by collage technique, (as are all
the stamps of Delphys). None of  this design is
computer art, excepting the text at the bottom margin,
which comes from an antique word processor.
