DREAM COURIER MAIL FROM MAIDEM KODOM

Maidem Kodom, or the Country of the People, is the name that I have given to an imaginary Maidu Indian Nation State. Oost Ho is the name of Bald Rock, an area in Butte County, California. Slome of the rock formations there are said to be the bones of Hiki, the great creator serpent. The stamps and mail you see here tell some of the stories of of the Concow Maidu of Northern California.

I wrote concerning the letter above:

This is a mythic letter from Hiki the Great Serpent who carved the valleys of California to Black Bear. or Chi Chi Pano, in Feather Falls Village, now a Ghost Town, as it used to be a logging town, once called Mooretown. It was bulldozed by the loggers so they could harvest the last of the big trees on Mooretown Ridge. There used to be a real USPS post office in that village.....a quaint town with rustic mountain cabins, a General Store as well as a community meeting hall.

The Bluebelly Lizard Man to Captain Frank Day

GHOST MAIL

Bluebelly Lizard Man is from a legendary story of the Concow Maidu. According to Coyote Man, or Bob Rathbun, he is said to have dwelled not far from Stringtown.

Here the Lizard Man writes to Frank Day, the last of the tradtional old time Maidu headmen. Opatoni is the old name for Oroville, the place where the Kuksu Religion was formulated. Hipiningkodom is the Valley of Heaven, indicating the Sacramento Valley.

CAMP EIGHTEEN

Camp Eighteen is the name of an old logging town, now long gone. It is about ten miles north of the site of Feather Falls Village, another logging town, also gone. Ghost stories are a big part of Concow Maidu folklore. Each family has it's own stories. Ooti Kollem means Acorn Woman. This name is a fantasy name, as we do not wish to unduly disturb the spirits of the departed.

A DEFINITION OF PHANTOM STAMPS

Melville, in 1923, wrote a classic philatelic treatise on what he called 'phantom' stamps. A phantom basically is a fantasy issue. A phantom country is one that is made up from imagination.

These stamps have nothing to do with ghosts.

Barbaru Frie Stajt was originally a colony established by Scarabeus Binkel. After he was lost at sea, an expedition from his home county sent a fleet of ships to find him. These were Binkel's cousins, the Digby Brothers. After arriving in Barbaru Frie Stajt, they reorganized the government, establishing Southern Digbyland, which issued stamps until partisans and allies of Binkel reclaimed the colony for Barbaru.

The stamps and covers seen here are from the new government of Barbaru which operates out of it's capital Attulio, as Binkel's Landing, the old capital had suffered so much damage from the attack of Sea Serpents of the Sea of Glass, who came to throw out the Digby Brothers.

BY LAND AND BY SEA

The cover above shows the use of two different courier services.., As this letter, intended for overseas delivery was sent orginally from Tommyrot, an inland town in Barbaru, the Bunkum Gopher Express carried the mail.

But after the letter entered the hands of a ship's captain, the Bunkum Shipping Company Express took over the duties of delivery until the mail reached Scarabia Wharf.

Inland Revenue in Barbaru customarily surcharges mail with postal tax stamps. The cover above is surchraged one eighth of a barbaroon. This monetary unit today is sometimes called a 'piece of eight.'

THE BATTLE OF THE SEA OF GLASS

After the horrible developments in Southern Digbyland, with the mermaid population of the pristine waters of Binkel's Bay forced to leave their homes due to the new oil rigs despoiling their habitat, the Governor of Binklish Vuyana asked the West Merremindian mermaids for help when he knew that the Gwogton-Digby oil companies had their eyes on Vuyana.

The map of West Merreminde was redrawn, adding new territories which now would be under the of the West Merreminde Naval Command. They called the Sea Serpent Battalion into active duty to combat the Digby Brothers' fleet that was advancing from Digby Bay.

With the battle raging in the Sea of Glass, the normal mermaid undersea mail deliveries were stopped by the West Merremindian government. The Gopher mail services however were fully operative, and also provided a safe and secure means to delivery important messages.
