The Muse of Oranges

Since I first began as an artist I have painted images of Madge,
whose name is short for Imagination. She is my psyche, my muse,
my inspiration. I long ago wrote of her realm, the land of
Cantharidia.

I always associated Madge with the orange. Her consort I styled
as William Earl of Blackberry.

Cyberstamps From the Moon

These stamps exist only in cyberspace. As such I define them as
'cyberstamps.'  Although these stamps were designed in 2009, they
will not be issued until the 23rd century, unless by some fluke in
space time they materialize on earth due to the demands of
contemporary philatelists.

Cyberstamps From the Moon

Excerpts from the Writings of Quantus Qwo
Postmaster General of the Moon

'By the 23rd century by earthly reckoning, the Republic of the Moon
had a fully functional postal administration. Protocommemorative
stamp issues complemented the definitive stamps in common useage.
The Loonese Postal Administration had it's headquarters in Moonton,
the captial city of the Moon.'

Quantus Qwo also writes:

'The monetary system of the Loonese is based on the Quark Standard:
77 Asteris equals 1.22 Megs. Math is done by paramental osmosis
among the educated Loonese.'

Quantus Qwo observes:

'Compact three wheeler Lektrikabs deliver the mail each morning to the
Loonese suburbs. . . Cameos of the Lunar Cinderella appear on the coins
and stamps of the Republic of the Moon, as she is the national allegory of
Liberty. . .The Loonese do not consider themselves colonists, as the Moon
is found in Free Space.'

Micronational Stamps From the Future

On this blog I have previously posted a few artistamps from the
Republic of the Moon. The stamps shown here are a bit different, as
they only exist in Cyberspace, which is to say--on computer file, as
they have not yet been printed on paper.

My earlier editions of Loonese stamps were printed in limited
editions of 100 copies each. I created a stamp book, 'The Republic
of the Moon,' which is now out of print. The book contained
protectively mounted stamps, signed by the artist.

Quantus Qwo failed to mention that these stamps are truly
'protocommemoratives' insofar as they were designed some
two hundred years or so before they were issued.

Cantharidian Faux Postage Stamps

Cantharidia is an island realm, conceived in Imagination. It is the
kingdom of my Muse, who appears in numerous forms in my art.
On these faux postage stamps from Cantharidia she is a Fairy
Goddess who espouses the protection of our planet's butterflies.

Human ignorance has allowed the proliferation of toxic residues
and insecticides that endanger not only insect species, but we
humans ourselves, whose food relies on regular pollination of our
crops.

Fairy Stamps From Cantharidia

These stamps were issued by the Royal Post Office of Cantharidia
to commemorate the efforts of the Royal Society to preserve our
pollinators for future generations on earth.

They are a good example of digital serial art imagery, having been
issued in two sheets of eight designs, for sixteen varieties altogether.

A map of Cantharidia is found in the selvage of the stamp sheets.

HAIKUTWOTOPEH: OLD MAN OF THE NORTH/ A Concow Maidu Legend/ FIGURATIVE ABSTRACTION/ The Story of How Gaming is Sacred Among the Maidu/ THE GRASS GAME/ A figurative pictographic abstraction by Eric Whollem/ A mixed media resist that interprets prehistoric Native American rock art in light of contemporary art

How the People Were Held Captive by Haikutwotopeh

According to Concow Maidu legend the People were gambled away
to the Old Man of the North who lived near Mt. Shasta. This happened
long, long ago. In traditional gambling among Native Americans any sort of
material goods are placed up in betting. The gambling away of one's own
relatives is another matter. . . The story of how the People were reclaimed
is related below. . .

Gambling among the Maidu is referred to as the Grass Game. It is played by
two teams who oppose each other, each first putting forth bets. Two bones
are held in a peron's hands. One bone has a black stripe down the middle to
differentiate it from the other bone. The singers on the opposite team sing
their gambling songs, meanwhile trying to guess which bone is in which hand
of the person concealing them.

A culture hero, Oankoitupeh, gambled with Haikutwotopeh, the Old Man
of the North, and won the People back. After this betting on one's relatives
was forbidden among the Maidu. It had caused extreme grief to the People
to have lost relatives in gaming.

Today the People live in Butte County, California, hundreds of miles to the
south of Shasta. But many of their old legends concern places like Weludih
near the Trinity River. The Cato Indians of the Coast Range are cousins of
the Maidu and share common cultural elements, such as the story of Woctolly,
the salmon merman. The Cato use the same phrase of greeting as the Concow:
'hey-ta-nanni.'

The triangular forms in the above drawing represent the Mt. Shasta area, or
the Trinity Alps. My painting is done in a pictographic style, based on my
studies of the Rock Art of early California. The Maidu are known to have
left a number of engravings in stone, but they never seem to have practiced
the art of painting on stone as done by Indians like the Modoc and the
Chumash.

Gambling is considered sacred today, largely because Oankoitupeh won the
People back in his contest with Haikutwotopeh. The Grass Game brings the
People together. It is 'just a game' according to Martin of Berry Creek,
California. But it is a symbol of unity.
