'One Feather Postage' From Maidem Kodom

When I first began to create this series of stamps to celebrate the
culture of the Concow Maidu, I followed suit with the practice of many
faux postage stamp creators and included a $1 denomination. The later
stamps in the series are denominated 'One Feather.'

THE CONCOW MAIDU LANGUAGE, GRASS GAMES, ETC.

'Maidem Kodom' means 'Land of the People' in the Maidu language.
Adrian Smith, former head of the Butte County Tribal Council, once
said to me back in the 1980's: "To know the language is to know the
culture."

Today the Mooretown Rancheria near Oroville has had the last of
the native speakers teach courses in the local dialect, so as to help
preserve the continuity of traditions. Mooretown is the old name for
a logging town that once existed on Mooretown Ridge. The town of
Feather Falls came later, another logging town; it also has passed
away, having been dismantled by the logging company that owned
the land.

Currently the center of 'town' in Feather Falls is near the Gold
Flake Bar, which houses the post office, etc. Although the original
Mooretown Rancheria was up on Mooretown Ridge, the modern
Mooretown Rancheria is in the valley today.

The Berry Creek Maidu have their own establishment in the valley
today as well. The Berry Creek Maidu have their own tribal connections;
but have always interacted with the Feather Falls people in the sacred
communion of the Grass Games.

Martin, a Concow Maidu of Berry Creek, once invited me to the Grass
Games in Bald Rock. There were only three folks from Feather Falls
present: Ralph Martin, myself, and an elderly lady--or as is said in
the Concow Maidu language, 'essu'--'old woman.' At these Grass Games
everyone sings gaming songs in the traditonal language. I met Martin
(of Berry Creek) in the warehouse of the Pacific Coast Producers
Cannery in Oroville, where we both were employees. Martin knew
a lot about making paints from earth pigments; and he related to
me stories about the traditional uses of earth paint.

                                 ERIC WHOLLEM

The Maidu language has three main subdivisions: Concow Maidu
for Butte County--the West People. Mountain Maidu for the region
of Plumas County and north towards Susanville. And the Nisenan
Maidu of Nevada County to the south.

The Blue Jay: Askosskoss
CONCOW MAIDU LANGUAGE

When I lived at Chi Chi Te the blue jays would always amuse me
with their antics. They are clowns. The cats were always frustrated
insofar as they could never catch the jays.

On a vinyl record of Maidu traditional songs that came out through
Pacific Western Traders in Folsom, California, there was one song
about the blue jay where I first learned the word, 'askosskoss.'

Concow Maidu Lore in the Paintings of Eric Whollem Video

I used to live in the house of Herb Young, a Maidu doctor, whose
songs are among those preserved in recordings of Maidu music.
Herb was related to the Mountain Maidu of Indian Valley, but had
married into the family who lived on what became for a time the
Mooretown Rancheria. The Maidu name for this place is Chi Chi
Te, or Black Earth Village.

Artist Stamps From Maidem Kodom
MICRONATION STAMPS CREATED IN HONOR OF THE MAIDU CULTURE

These faux postage stamps are from the artist's own imagined postal
service for the Concow Maidu. A 'micronation' is a made up country.
As such 'Maidem Kodom' does not exist as such in the real world. There
are numerous Maidu tribal groups that are recognized by the government,
or trying to be recognized. As artistic creations, these stamps are not by
any means intended to represent any of the authentic social structures
of the current Native Americans of Butte County, California.

                    CONCOW MAIDU TRADITIONS
                            stamps by Eric Whollem

'Maidem Kodom' translates as Land of the People or Country of the People.
These stamps are created with great respect and love for the traditions
of the Maidu, with whom I have interacted since the early 1970's, when
I began living at Black Earth Village in the Feather Falls area.

THE HEMENI

Ralph Martin, one of the last native speakers on Mooretown Ridge,
is well known for having created a large Hemeni, or Roundhouse,
out of natural materials. This inspired the art seen on this stamp.

The Hemeni is used for traditional dances and for sacred games.
Among the Maidu the Grass Game is sacred. There is an old story
that tells us that the People (the Maidem) were taken captive by
the Old Man of the North. Oankoitupeh, a great hero, gambled with
the Old Man and won the people back.

Haikutwotopeh is the name of the Old Man of the North. He lived
at Mt. Shasta, which is called Kom by the Concow. 'Kom' means
'snow.'

Thus the Grass Game is a nucleus for social interaction--keeps the
People going as a group. It is very important culturally to the Maidu.

EARTH PAINTINGS

Back in 1973 I began making my own paints from natural earths,
charcoal and ash, using various glue binders. The art on this stamp
is made from pigments gathered in Butte County and a few other places
in Northern California.

The Maidu traditionally have used earth paints to paint their bodies in
their traditional dances. Acorn meal paint was used to paint their houses.

In the old days a green earth paint was traded across the valley by the
Concow. People went on foot over to the Coast Range, where barter
with other groups enhanced the enjoyment of life.

The Muse of the Sea

The Age of Aquarius will be the era of the Waterbearer, which is
the designation of this astrological symbol. This image is my own
version of the Aquarian symbology. The crystal tower that rises
from the sea is an interpreation of the interconnectedness of
communications, said to be the hallmark of the New Age.

The Ascension of the World
There are widely varying metaphysical interpretations of the
upcoming planetary alignment in 2012. The postive view is that
this event will be a doorway to a New Age on earth. . . the Age
of Aquarius. It will be a time of advanced intercommunications,
and human awareness.

These stamps are faux postage from my own imagined United
Aethernet Nations, an organization dedicated to promotion of
international harmony.

SAVE 'SAVE THE SEAL' SEALS

Many stamp collectors have an interest in the labels that
appear in the margins of sheets of stamps. These labels
are a form of 'cinderella,' which is a non-postal stamp.

However this sheet of stamps, being from the fantasy country
of Merreminde, is a cinderella stamp edition. Thus the labels
in these cinderella's margins are 'cinderella cinderellas.'

A Sheet of Stamps Promoting the Protection of Marine Mammals

The Merreminde Postal Administration has issued these stamps
to advance the cause of the seals, who are afflicted with diminished
food resources, acidic water, and particulate plastic debris, all of
which are harmful to sea life.

Insofar as these are a 'cyberstamp' edition, they exist only on
computer file as of the moment. A cyberstamp, as I use the term,
is a stamp that exists only in cyberspace. This is common with
many artistamps.

THE BEAN SIDHE/ The Story of the Banshee/ The orgins of the term 'fairy'/ THE PERIS OF PERSIA AND THE FENIAN MIGRATIONS/ Ceramic Goddess Sculpture/ Copper carbonate on white earthenware clay/ A MYTHOGRAPHIC STUDY OF CELTIC ART AND CULTURE

The Irish Legend of the Bean Sidhe

The Banshee, well known from folklore, is referred to in the Gaelic
language of the Irish as the Bean Sidhe. The term Bean means 'Goddess'
and the expression 'Sidhe,' pronounced 'Shee,' refers to those elemental
beings who are sometimes considered 'fairyfolk.' The term 'fairy' is said
by some Celtic scholars not to apply to ancient Irish folklore. However,
some speculate--on phonetic similarities--that insofar as 'fir' means 'man'
in Gaelic, a 'fir sidhe,' may have been original roots from which 'fairy'
sprang. Usually the fairies have been associated more with British legend,
according to some students of mythology, who advance the preeminence
of the leprecaun with respect to the Irish. The concept of the 'wee people'
did not arise until Shakespeare's time, with the advent of the popular
Midsummer's Night's Dream.

However, we will see below a presentation of ideas that may give us
other etymological roots for the term 'fairy' and reasonably
demonstrate that the fairies are indeed related to Celtic legend.

ELVES, FAIRIES & GIANTS

In the lore of old Europe, beings such as the elves and fairies were
said originally to be about the size of normal humanity.

There are, however many myths that deal with the Giants. These were
called the Aesir in Scandinavia. The original Irish giants were the Fomors.
The Titans were the race of giants in ancient Greece. While in Persia
there were tales of the Ocean Devs, huge sea giants from the Sea of
Vourukasha.

THE PERIS: THE ORIGINAL FAIRIES

The Persians called their fairies Peris. And insofar as Persia is the
motherland of the Indoeuropean peoples, the Peri seems to me to be
the original lexeme from which the word 'fairy' seems to have arisen.

The Celts of Ireland have historical roots in Persia. The Fenian Migration
began in Persia, where one Fenius Farsa lead a group of peoples to new
lands. Farsa means Parsee, or Persian. Fenius was a Scythian, from
that group of  Central Asian tribespeople whose art recalls the coiled
and intertwined arts of the Celts of Europe.

The Fenians travelled to Phoenicia, Egypt, Carthage and Spain before
embarking on a sea journey to the north countries. Spain is called
Iberia; and one old name for Ireland is Iberiu.

It seems to me that the term fairy as is used by modern Celtic and
British people could in fact be derived from the Persian 'Peri.'  To
augment this argument, the Persians have a legend of the Peri
Mergiana, whose name means Sea Wisdom. She may have been
mythically transformed into the Morrigan, or Sea Queen, of Celtic
legend.

There is room to speculate that Morrigan was a Bean Sidhe, as she
is said to have appeared in the form of ravens on the battlefields
after a war to take the souls of the departed to the Otherworld.
The Banshee's wail is considered to be the mourning cry of those
sidhe whose function it is to transport the departed souls to Emania,
the Celtic Heavenworld.

CELTIC CERAMIC TRADITIONS

My sculpture exhibited on this post blends Celtic stylization with
Hellenic art, and is thus a syncretic mythographic work of art for our
modern times. The feet placed together at the base are found in many
Greek sculptures of the Kore. The Greeks colonized Ireland at one
time. . .the Milesian migration of many centuries ago.

The Irish had a tradtion of ceramic masks, but these are now lost,
having been thrown into lakes after the time of St. Patrick, when
the pre-Christian arts of Ireland were placed in disrepute in keeping
with the new wave of spiritual teachings.
