Postal Notes, Postal Currency & Shinplasters
Postal notes first appeared in the 1860's mostly in America, Australia, Canada and New Zealand. Originally these labels were intended, like the modern money order, to be a means of sending money or payments through the mail.
However these labels were also usually good for purchase of stamps at the post office and also for use as actual postage stamps. Mostly postal notes appeared imperforate, but many were perforated in sheets like regular postage stamps.
What you see on this blog are, of course, my own contemporary fantasy versions of these stamps, here presented as issues of the New West Digbyland pirate postal service.
The term Shinplaster arose to describe both these stamps as well as local banknotes issued by regional banks. Another term that describes this material is 'fractional currency.'

Paquebot Covers
Paquebot mail is a designation of Ship's Mail, or mail sent by packet at sea. Such mail is bound by international agreements to be delivered in the country designated on the address of the covers, thought the covers are franked at sea with the stamps of the country of origin of the sender of the letter.
