These stamps are signed by 'H.R.' which is actually my fantasy designation of my grandfather, who I conceived as a source of production for Black Bart's postage due scam. Not content with his ill-gotten gains, the poet/robber here is seen as franking the stolen mails with postage due stamps....a type of poetic injustice.

Stringtown Printers is a fictional designation of a printing house, located ostensibly in Stringtown, a small community not far from Black Bart Road in Butte County, California. 

This community is not named after a community gallows, but rather after the description of the old Maidu Indian village that once commanded the site, a village that was composed of a long row of houses, a string of dwellings.
