TECHNICAL APPLICATIONS OF ASH PAINT

The sculpture above was built around a loose structure of paper,
which burned out during the firing. The piece has many appertures
designed for ease of firing, and release of the smoke from the
inner paper form.

White glaze, designed for raku firings, was applied to the surface of
The Matron. This formed a resist for the post firing application of ash
paint in polymer emulsion. Ash paint is historically the first type of
paint used in ceramics. Polymer dries as hard as iron, making the
final resist coat relatively permanent.
