The Gunas

The gunas are mentioned in the Bhagavad Gita, as the
three propensitites of the mind. Satva Guna is the guna
of purity. Raja Guna is the propensity of passion. And
Tamas Guna is inertia and sloth.

The three gunas are said to be represented by the colors
white, red, and black respectively. As such these colors
are a sort of archetypical primary color code, rather
different than the modern red, blue, and yellow which are
frequently mentioned as the primary colors.

In the pottery of Central America the colors red, white
and black are used over and over again. The artists use
earth pigments to manufacture these colors. In a sense
they may be following suit with the guna color system
from India.

The painting above synthesizes the guna color system
with the modern primary color system of western art.
