The Blue Jay: Askosskoss
CONCOW MAIDU LANGUAGE

When I lived at Chi Chi Te the blue jays would always amuse me
with their antics. They are clowns. The cats were always frustrated
insofar as they could never catch the jays.

On a vinyl record of Maidu traditional songs that came out through
Pacific Western Traders in Folsom, California, there was one song
about the blue jay where I first learned the word, 'askosskoss.'

Concow Maidu Lore in the Paintings of Eric Whollem Video

I used to live in the house of Herb Young, a Maidu doctor, whose
songs are among those preserved in recordings of Maidu music.
Herb was related to the Mountain Maidu of Indian Valley, but had
married into the family who lived on what became for a time the
Mooretown Rancheria. The Maidu name for this place is Chi Chi
Te, or Black Earth Village.
