A Map of the Lost Continent of Lemuria

Numerous maps of Lemuria have been made over the years.
A computer image search will provide the viewer with many
examples.

My map, which appears on this faux postage stamp from
Lemuria, differs from many of the maps mentioned above in
that it concentrates on only a small portion of Lemuria, that
section that is centered in the Mount Shasta area of Northern
California.

THE MT. SHASTA LEMURIAN STORY

Mt. Shasta is legendary for the folkloric belief in a race of
'Lemurian remnants' that are said to dwell within the mountain.
Back in the early 20th century a group of tall white-robed
people appeared in Mt. Shasta City, buying supplies with
nuggets of gold.

As a book about Lemuria by Cerve (the Rosicrucian)  was quite
popular at the time, these white robed people were interpreted
as Lemurians.

A famous book about Atlantis was written at Shasta in the
1880's: 'A Dweller on Two Planets.' The book had illustrations of
flying saucer craft--very unusual for a book of that time period.
The UFO subject did not become generally popular in America
until late into the 20th century. Shasta has been a haven of
progressive metaphysical and esoteric thought for many years.

The people of the Shasta area are very frequently very spiritual
people. The mountain is filled with radiant spiritual power to anyone
sensitive enough to feel it. Shasta has been described as the 'Crown
Chakra of California.'

Personally I can attest to the spiritual ambiance of the area,
having had innumerable meditative spiritual experiences in the
proximity of the mountain.

My first childhood memories are of Dunsmuir, a small town
ten miles to the south of Shasta. I also lived in Yreka as a boy,
and remember going to the movie theater in Weed at the base
of the mountain.

MY LEMURIAN STAMPS

As the subject of Lemuria is close to the heart of people who
know Mt. Shasta, I was inspired to interpret the folklore of the
mountain in a series of faux postage stamps like the one you
see above. These are fantasy stamps and my reconstructions of
Lemurian and Shasta folklore partake of my own personal
interpretation, which is colored largely by my involvement in
the legends of the Maidu Indians of Northern California.

MAIDU INDIAN STORIES ABOUT MT. SHASTA

I travelled to Shasta with the head of the Butte County tribal
council years ago. He introduced me to the rock art outcrops
in the desert to the north of the mountain.

According to Stephen Powers' work on California Native
Americans, the Maidu legendarily have a story about how
their people were taken prisoner by the Old Man of the North,
who dwelled at Shasta. He was called Haikutwotopeh. The
Maidu culture hero, Oankoitupeh, went forth to save the people,
who he reclaimed by gambling with Haikutwotopeh. To this day
it is forbidden among the Maidu to gamble actual people or
family members.

Adrian Smith told me that the Maidu name for Mt. Shasta is
Kom, which means 'Snow.'

Lorraine Nichols,  a Maidu lady who for years has been an antiquarian
of tribal artifacts, working for various museums, enthusiastically
has spoken to me about her own views on Lemuria and Atlantis.

LEMURIA AND ATLANTIS

Helene Blavatsky, the Theosophist, wrote years ago that the Gobi
Desert in Asia was a center of Lemurian culture. In modern terms
it is now widely accepted by anthropologists that Native Americans
are definitely related to Siberans and the Mongolians of Central
Asia.

Lemuria was a term originally invented by a conventional
paleontologist. Today the term may have fallen into disfavor by
regular scientists, due to it's popularity among metaphysical
esotericists. My tentative view on the matter of the Lemurian
remnants in the Americas is that the Lemurians are none other
than the Asian ancestors of the Indian cultures we know today.

I also take the view that Atlantis is the same as Aztlan, the
legendary island home of the Aztecs, and that Atlantis may
well be just another name for Mesoamerican society.

Altantis is said to have 'sunk' 10,000 years ago, which would
place it 40,000 years after Lemurian migrants became the first
Americans.
